International institutions make claims to authority that can clash with both personal and collective autonomy. At the same time, they are essential to solve collective action problems related to global challenges such as climate change and poverty. This workshop critically assess accounts of personal and collective autonomy, and explores how they can be expanded to problems of legitimacy, specifically the legitimacy of international institutions, by bringing together experts from philosophy, political theory and law.
