Abstract
Technological development is heavily contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and land use changes, thus being doubly responsible for climate change. We qua citizens, scientists, and even representatives exert low social control over technological innovations, from successive smartphone models to power plant generations, letting the driving forces of technological development unchallenged. It is about time for us to reclaim technology. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the relevant debates in philosophy of technology. I will argue for the need to investigate the driving forces of technological development in the context of climate change, going beyond economic market imperatives and beyond the logics of engineering research & development.
