ABSTRACT
Within the broad term 'democratic state' there is a messy set of imagined virtues, vices and possibilities. In this paper, I consider some of the imaginaries attached to the democratic welfare state by thinking about what is shared, and who or what is supposed to care by taking up the question of what is common and how. The paper asks how we might use the dysfunctions articulated in the democracy research projects to set out a larger agenda for what democracy could, or should be.
