This paper discusses the ideas in the works of the Alva Myrdal future studies group and Swedish future studies discourse. Historical knowledge of future discourses in the past may be an important way to strengthen critical and democratic perspectives on present future visions and discourses. The fundamental dilemma of limits of social engineering in a democratic society and the choice of futures that was present then is as current now.
