Progress in Ethics

This is an international network of researchers from a variety of disciplines, providing a forum for discussions on what progress have been made in the field of ethics.

Philosophers of science have long debated the nature and assessment of scientific progress, and a parallel discussion about progress in philosophy has recently been emerging. Less attention, however, has been devoted to questions about progress in ethical theorizing specifically.

For instance, what would progress in ethics amount to, and to what extent has such progress actually been made? Does progress in ethics require the resolution of theoretical disagreements among experts? How do questions about progress in ethics interact with metaethical questions concerning, e.g., the existence and nature of moral truths? And how can progress in future ethical theorizing best be promoted?

Progress in Ethics is an international research network whose purpose is to provide a forum for systematic discussion of these issues. The network consists in experts from a variety of relevant fields, including moral philosophy, epistemology, and philosophy of science, and promotes collaboration between them for example through organizing workshops and conferences.

The initiation of the network was funded through a grant from The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. During 2024–2027, its activities will be organized by the research project Hidden Convergence in Ethics, which is hosted by the Institute of Futures Studies.
