Abstract
This research project, with the subtitle Responsibility in a new age, has (at least formally) yet to start. The project might be thought of as interdisciplinary, with a base in law (I’m a criminal law professor), Thoughts presented will be very tentative, and I welcome any kind of input.
The present age seems to be one where the idea of responsibility is multi-faceted, changing and expanding on a number of different paths. On a general level, if something unwished-for has happened the next thought seems to be that someone must be (or at least must be held) responsible for it. In the project, I will try to follow and grasp some such paths (regarding e.g. who may be held responsible, who or what should be deemed capable of holding someone to account, etc) and to see whether something – perhaps some kind of essence (although I doubt this) – could be extracted.
Just to mention some (of many!) areas of interest: Regarding agency delicate problems arise with the development of technology – AI and related – but we seem to find interesting developments also e.g. in the area of holding corporations responsible as if they were organisms. In the application of some of the rules in the general part of Swedish criminal law a move can be characterized from holding responsible for what one did in the outside physical world to holding responsible for what one wanted to happen. When it comes to time we are inclined to wish to hold present generations responsible backwards (reparations etc) as well as forwards (to future generations).
