Abstract
In this talk I will sketch andcontrast two different epistemic attitudes that roughly correspond toBayesianism and Popperian falsificationism. I will argue that they both havevirtues that render them important roles in scientific thinking, but that onlyone of them is suitable situations that require urgent decision-making.Examples will be taken from the early work on the atomic bomb and fromcontemporary work on artificial intelligence, covid-19 and existential risk.
